The circle of life – goodbye to an old friend

5 Apr

Banyan, our second rat terrier, was born in 1996. We flew to Florida to get him from a small breeder. Unfortunately, his breeder and vet hadn’t protected his litter mates very well and they all had mange, an ugly parasitic infestation that is quite infectious. We were given a clean health certificate (illegally) and told he only had a light heat rash, so we flew home with him on a plane. Mange is terrible, and the effort it took to nurse him back to health was toxic and intensive. As a result, he was plagued with auto-immune issues for the first five years of his life. He went through many bouts of chemotherapy and steroids, but in the face of all this adversity he maintained a happy-go-lucky nature. He was the best dog we ever had and was always ready for the next adventure (travels on many airplane trips, sailing and living on two boats, daily car journeys, many new houses, and the births of both our girls).

The last two years with him have been difficult, as we watched his health decline into extreme old age. It’s hard getting old, buddy, we know. He lost most of his hearing and vision, and his bad back caused nerve damage that him incontinent and caused difficulty walking. It was hard to see his tail wagging under his diapers, but it did every time we petted him, even up to the end.

We knew we were on borrowed time these last few months, as his kidneys had begun to fail. Early this morning (around 12:30am) he started having seizures related to his kidney failure, and we knew it was time to let him go. Difficult to do, but also a relief, as we could bring him one last measure of comfort.

We love you, Banyan, and want to say thank you for all the years of laughter and joy. You weren’t just a good dog, you were a GREAT dog and you will live on in our hearts and memories.
