After an awesome trip to Washington, DC to see comedian Louis CK at the Kennedy Center with my good friend Roy, I arrived back into Jacksonville just in time to say goodbye to Robin and Madi as they took off to New York city for some big city fun. For the last year or so we have been hearing from Peyton that she really (REALLY) wants to see a manatee. Well, with a rental car and the will to complete the task of making her little dream come true, Peyton and I drove the 1.5 hours to Blue Springs State park in Orange City, Florida.
Manatees love warm water. During the winter months they migrate to warm water, wherever that may be. Blue Springs is a natural hot spring that keeps the water temperature in the river at least 73 degrees regardless of the air temperature. As such the manatees flock to this location to frolic in this natural bathtub.
Blue Springs creek is absolutely stunning. The crystal clear water allowed us to view not just a multitude of manatees but also a couple of alligators as well! All in all the three hour round trip was so very worth it if only to see Peyton’s eyes light up at the sight of these gentle creatures.
